  • target: This parameter can specify that the linked resource opens in a new tab (and not in the current one)
  • title: Defines the title of a link, which also appears as a hint when hovering.
  • rel: This parameter can clarify the relationship to the link target. This includes: "nofollow" distances the target page from the link source. It also instructs search engines not to follow the link and not to use it for ranking determination.
  • "ugc" indicates that the link is made by a user, e.g., in a forum discussion or blog comments.
  • "sponsored" indicates that it is advertising.

Search engine crawlers read websites and analyze their content. When they encounter links to other domains, these are also processed. Google evaluates links from one website to another as recommendations.

Among the more than 200 ranking factors, a domain's backlinks weigh heavily in determining rankings. This is repeatedly confirmed by Google.

However, not every link counts equally: The relevance of the link source determines the value of the link. The more relevant Google considers the link source, the more the link counts - and vice versa. A link from a reputable daily newspaper has more effect than a link from an unknown, private blog.

If a link is marked with the attribute "nofollow" or "sponsored", search engines are instructed to ignore the link for ranking determination. Therefore, such links are less interesting for search engine optimization.

There are several ways to check if Google is aware of a backlink:

A look at the link report in Google Search Console can show for your own domain if a link has been recognized. Unfortunately, Google Search Console only shows backlinks for your own domain, the display is not in real-time, and the link report is also not entirely complete.

Another way is to use the Google Site query. If you enter the command site:linksource.com/subpage-with-link/ in Google search, you will find out if the search engine already has the respective page in its index. This is a very good indicator!
