After discussing Onpage measures as a crucial foundation for good rankings in the previous chapter, we now focus on Offpage measures in search engine optimization. Offpage encompasses all actions performed outside one's own domain aimed at increasing the domain's visibility on the internet.

Outside one's own domain, it is primarily Backlinks to a domain that Google and other search engines use to determine rankings. Those who want to be found at the top of search results with their domain must ensure that relevant websites link to their own domain.

We explain in detail below which strategies can be used to improve one's Backlink profile. In any Offpage measures, one should always remember: Google and other search engines have changed their algorithms over the years and have become much stricter in evaluating Backlinks - we will naturally address this topic as well.

A link is technically a reference from one website to another. Visitors to the website can click on a link to go directly to the target page. Links thus serve, among other things, for navigation. Links can lead to other pages on the same domain, which is called an internal link, or to other domains and their subpages. In the latter case, it is referred to as an external link.

For a better understanding, let's briefly dive into the technical backgrounds: A link is marked with HTML and looks like this in the source code:

In the above example, the words Link to the target page are the link, they form the link text and serve as orientation for visitors and search engines about what is found on the target page. The URL in quotation marks is the link target, where visitors arrive after clicking on the link text. Instead of words, images and other elements can also be linked.

Incoming links to a domain are called Backlinks if they originate from other domains.

But why are links a fundamental part of search engine optimization?

Search engines like Google view links as recommendations: If domain A links to domain B, the search engine assesses it as a positive recommendation for domain B. You can imagine the process somewhat like when an acquaintance recommends a particular restaurant or service provider - you often take this recommendation into account. The effect of such a link recommendation depends on how recognized the link source is by Google. A link from an established website that is linked to by many other websites has a greater effect than one from an insignificant domain.

For human visitors to a website, links primarily serve as navigation aids, while search engines use links as a ranking factor to determine search results.

☑️ Dofollow and Nofollow

A link can be equipped with different attributes that can provide browsers or search engines with various additional information. A particularly important link attribute is Dofollow or Nofollow. If an outgoing link is marked as Nofollow, search engines are instructed not to follow the link - and not to consider it for ranking. The link is thus devalued.

A Nofollow marking can be done as follows within the link:

Another option for using the Nofollow attribute is in the head section of the website, in this case, all outgoing links on this page are marked with Nofollow.

According to Google, outgoing links should be equipped with the Nofollow attribute if they represent paid advertising, or if the link source wishes to distance itself from the link target.

If a link is not marked with Nofollow, it is automatically Dofollow and registered by search engines as a normal link.

It is important to mention that Nofollow links are by no means bad, one should just not attribute the same significance to them as the Dofollow variant. A natural link profile naturally includes Nofollow links. However, it usually does not make sense to focus Offpage measures on building such devalued Backlinks.

Other attributes that describe the relationship to the link target include “sponsored” and “ugc”. The latter indicates that it is user-generated content and should therefore be treated differently.
